How to Clean Muddy Paw Prints Off Floors, Walls and Furniture
A wet walk, a dig in the garden or a run through the yard, and your dog comes in with four muddy feet. In a few seconds there are paw prints across the floor, up the wall where it jumped, on the sofa and on the bed. Mud is one of the easier pet messes to clean, as long as you do it in the right order. This guide covers hard floors, carpet, painted walls and furniture, plus a simple setup at the door that stops most of it.
It follows the wall cleaning advice of the paint maker Sherwin-Williams and the entry mat guidance of the flooring maker Shaw. Check the care instructions for your own floors, paint and furniture as well.
The golden rule: let mud dry on soft surfaces
Wet mud smears. On carpet, rugs and fabric, rubbing wet mud pushes it deeper into the fibers and spreads it wider. If you can, leave it to dry completely, then break it up and vacuum most of it away before you use any liquid. On hard floors and walls, wet mud can be wiped up straight away, as long as you lift it rather than spread it.
Hard floors: tile, vinyl, laminate and wood
- Keep the dog off the area so the prints are not walked further.
- Lift wet mud with paper towels, or let it dry and sweep or vacuum it up. Grit left on the floor gets ground in underfoot and can scratch the finish.
- Damp-mop or wipe with a cleaner made for that floor type, using a well-wrung mop or cloth, not a wet one.
- Dry the floor, especially wood and laminate, which should not stay wet.
For the right cleaner for your floor, see our guides to hardwood, laminate and vinyl plank and tile and grout. The same floor care rules apply to mud.
Carpet and rugs
- Let the mud dry completely. Do not rub it while it is wet.
- Break up the dried mud gently with your fingers or a soft brush.
- Vacuum slowly, in several directions, until no more loose dirt comes up.
- Treat any mark that is left with a carpet cleaner suitable for your carpet, following the label. Blot, do not rub, and work from the outside of the mark inwards.
- Blot with a clean damp cloth to rinse, then blot dry and let the carpet dry fully before walking on it.
For wool and natural fiber rugs, take more care with water; see pet stains on wool and jute area rugs.
Painted walls, doors and baseboards
Dogs that jump up leave prints on walls and doors, and the baseboards near the door collect splashes. Sherwin-Williams’ advice for cleaning painted walls:
- Use mild soap and warm water. Sherwin-Williams calls this the best solution for cleaning walls, as it removes grime without harming the paint.
- Wring the cloth out well. Mix a few drops of mild detergent with warm water, dampen a soft cloth or sponge, wring it out and wipe gently in circular motions. Rinse the cloth regularly, then dry the wall with a clean towel.
- Be gentle with flat and matte paint. Sherwin-Williams says the trick is gentle pressure and not getting the wall too wet, because heavy pressure and over-wetting can damage matte paint.
- For tougher, dried-on dirt, Sherwin-Williams suggests a mix of baking soda and water as a mild stain remover.
- Test first. Sherwin-Williams recommends testing your cleaning solution and technique on an inconspicuous spot. You are good to go if the paint still looks bright and there are no water marks once it dries.
Let dried mud flake off and brush away the loose dirt before you wipe, so you are not smearing it across the paint.
Sofas, chairs and beds
- Let the mud dry on the fabric, then brush and vacuum it off with an upholstery tool.
- Check the cleaning code on the furniture tag before using any liquid. Our guide to pet stains on couches and upholstery explains the W, S, WS and X codes.
- Treat what is left with a cleaner that suits the code, blotting rather than rubbing.
- Wash removable covers, throws and bedding as their labels say. Shake or brush the dried dirt off first so it does not end up in your machine.
Leather: wipe wet mud off with a damp cloth, or let it dry and brush it off, then clean with a product made for leather.
If the mud is on your dog’s coat or harness too, see how to clean dog clothes, coats and harnesses.
Stop it at the door
Two mats, not one
Shaw describes two kinds of entry mats: soil removal mats used at exterior entrances to take soil off shoes, and absorbent mats used inside to stop moisture getting onto the carpet. Shaw also says mats should cover at least six footsteps to capture the soil. Paws work the same way: a coarse mat outside the door and an absorbent one inside catch much more than a small doormat.
A paw wipe station
- Keep a stack of old towels or a dedicated paw towel by the door you use for walks.
- Keep a small bucket or a paw washer cup with lukewarm water, for really muddy days.
- Wipe each paw, including between the pads, and dry it before your dog goes further in.
- Teach a short wait on the mat at the door; most dogs learn it quickly with a treat.
- Wash the towels and mats often. A muddy mat stops working.
Other habits that help
- Use a washable throw on the sofa and the bed if your dog is allowed up.
- Keep a washable runner along the route from the door.
- Have the dog’s coat trimmed around the feet if your groomer recommends it, so less mud clings to the fur.
If muddy paws come in through a pet door, keep the flap clean too, so it still seals: see how to clean a pet door or cat flap.
The easiest prints to clean are the ones that never happen. See how to clean your dog’s paws after a walk for a quick routine at the door, including winter salt.
Keep cleanup supplies ready
Mud is the easy part. For the messes that come with it, like an accident on the way in, our Pet Cleanup Kit has gloves, an enzyme odor product, an absorbent powder and a UV black light in one pouch. Check the label for which surfaces each product suits.
Frequently asked questions
Should I clean muddy paw prints wet or dry?
On carpet, rugs and fabric, let them dry first and vacuum the dirt away, then treat any mark that is left. On hard floors and painted walls, you can lift wet mud with paper towels and wipe the rest with a well-wrung damp cloth.
How do I get muddy paw prints off a flat painted wall?
Brush off the dried dirt, then wipe gently with a soft cloth dampened in warm water with a few drops of mild detergent and wrung out well. Sherwin-Williams says to use gentle pressure and not over-wet matte paint, and to test on a hidden spot first.
What is the best mat for muddy dog paws?
Use two: a coarse mat outside that scrapes off soil, and an absorbent one inside that catches moisture, as Shaw describes for entrances. The longer the mat, the more steps it catches.
How do I keep my dog from tracking mud in?
Set up a paw wipe station at the door with a towel and a mat, wipe and dry each paw, and teach your dog to wait on the mat until you are done.
