Dog Anal Gland Smell: How to Get It Out of Carpet, Furniture and Bedding
Few pet smells are as sharp as the one from a dog’s anal glands. It is a strong, fishy odor, and it can turn up on the sofa, the rug or your bed after your dog scoots, gets startled, or simply lies down after the glands have leaked. The fluid is oily, so the smell clings to fabric and carpet longer than you might expect. This guide covers how to clean it off carpet, furniture, bedding and floors, and how to tell when the smell is a reason to call the vet.
The background on anal glands follows the UK vet charity PDSA’s pages on blocked anal glands and bottom problems, in our own words and linked under further reading. The cleaning steps are the same careful methods we use for other pet stains on this site. We do not cover expressing the glands yourself; that is a job for your veterinarian or groomer.
Why the smell is so hard to shift
Dogs have two small scent glands just inside the anus. Normally they empty a little fluid each time the dog poops. PDSA describes the fluid as strong smelling. When the glands are too full, irritated or infected, they can leak, or empty all at once when a dog is scared. In our experience, a sudden fishy smell on a dog or its bed very often comes from these glands. The fluid is oily and strong, so a small spot can scent a whole room, and plain water alone tends to spread it rather than lift it.
Act fast: the first five minutes
- Blot, do not rub. Press paper towels or an old cloth onto the spot to soak up as much fluid as you can. Rubbing pushes the oil deeper.
- Wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards.
- Check your dog. Wipe the area under the tail with a damp pet wipe or cloth so they do not spread it to the next spot they sit on.
- Open a window or run a fan while you clean.
Carpet and rugs
- Blot up what you can, then dampen the spot lightly with cool water and blot again.
- Loosen the oil with a small drop of mild dish soap in a cup of cool water. Dab it on with a cloth, blot, then rinse by blotting with plain water. Keep it damp, not soaked.
- Apply an enzyme cleaner made for pet odors and leave it for the time on the label. Enzymes break down the organic matter that keeps the smell going, the same way they work on urine.
- Let it air dry, then sniff the spot up close. If you still smell it, repeat the enzyme step.
- Skip the steam cleaner until the smell is gone. Heat can set organic odors into the fibers.

Sofas and upholstery
Look for the cleaning code on the furniture label first. W and WS codes can take water based cleaning; S means solvent only and X means vacuum only. On water safe fabric, blot, dab with the dish soap solution, rinse by blotting, then apply enzyme cleaner on a cloth rather than spraying it straight on. Do not soak the cushion, because the fluid can wick into the foam. If a removable cover allows machine washing, wash it as below. See how to clean pet stains from a couch for the full guide to codes.
Bedding, blankets and dog beds
- Blot off any fresh fluid and pre treat the spot with a little liquid laundry detergent or enzyme laundry pre soak. Work it in gently and leave it for 15 to 30 minutes.
- Wash on the warmest setting the label allows, with your usual detergent. Do not overload the machine, so the water can move through the fabric.
- Sniff before drying. If the smell is still there, wash again. A hot dryer can lock in what is left.
- Dry fully, outdoors in the sun if you can.
Dog bed inserts that cannot go in the washer need the spot cleaning steps from the carpet section and a long air dry. See how to clean a dog bed. If the smell lingers in your washing machine afterwards, run an empty hot cycle; cleaning pet hair and odor from your washer and dryer has the steps.
Hard floors
Wipe the fluid up with paper towels, then wash the spot with warm water and a little dish soap to cut the oil. Finish with your usual floor cleaner and let it dry. On tile, give the grout a scrub, since it soaks up oily residue.
If the whole room still smells
- Air the room out well and wash any throws or cushion covers your dog lay on.
- Check places you may have missed: the edge of the sofa, the car seat, the crate pad and the spot where your dog was sitting when it happened.
- Sprinkle baking soda on dry carpet, leave it overnight and vacuum. It helps with leftover smell after the stain is cleaned, not instead of cleaning.

When the smell means a vet visit
An occasional leak, for example when your dog is frightened, is common. But if the fishy smell keeps coming back, it is worth getting checked. PDSA lists signs that mean a vet visit. Call your veterinarian if your dog:
- scoots a lot, or keeps licking or biting under the tail
- has a swelling, lump, redness or an open, oozing spot near the anus
- seems in pain when sitting or pooping
- is lethargic, off their food or has a fever
Swelling, bleeding or pain should not wait. Your vet can empty the glands and check for infection or an abscess, and talk with you about why it keeps happening. Do not try to squeeze the glands at home unless your vet has shown you how.
Keep cleanup supplies ready
Our Pet Cleanup Kit is made for pet stains and odors on carpet and fabric. Keep it with gloves, paper towels and a few old cloths so you can deal with a leak right away.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get anal gland smell out of my couch?
Check the cleaning code, then blot, dab with a mild dish soap solution, rinse by blotting and finish with an enzyme cleaner applied on a cloth. Let it air dry and repeat if you can still smell it.
How long does anal gland smell last?
On skin and hard floors it fades soon after cleaning. On fabric and carpet it can linger for days if the oily fluid is not lifted out, so it pays to clean it fully rather than cover it.
Does vinegar remove anal gland smell?
Vinegar can help a little, but it does not break down the oily fluid well. A dish soap rinse to lift the oil, then an enzyme cleaner, works better. Never mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaners.
Why did my dog leave a fishy smell on the bed?
Most often the anal glands leaked, which can happen when they are full or when a dog is startled. If it happens often, ask your veterinarian to check the glands.
